They've done it! Our three Garcia Exploration 45 have successfully completed the Northwest Passage!

Leaving Greenland at the beginning of August, it took them around 6 weeks to cover…

As a reminder, the GARCIA Exploration 45 N° 27, N° 35 and N° 38 met up in Greenland in July with the aim of completing this famous and little-traveled route.

The forecasts were rather pessimistic at the time, with ice remaining very present late this year. Nevertheless, they crossed the Baffin Sea into Lancaster Sound, taking it one step at a time as the way opened up. All 3 chose to pass through the narrow passage of Bellot Strait, only 2 km wide, a little shorter en route, but which ice can also obstruct in strong winds, due to its narrow width. And then to continue along the so-called Amundsen Trail, the famous explorer's route.

They positioned themselves in Hudson Bay, north of Lancaster Sound, waiting for the right moment to head south towards Bellot Strait. HAURU and NIGHT OWL passed through unhindered. Adriano and Marisa on VOYAGER had a more eventful passage, with 2 other boats. They had to turn back to assist a boat whose underpowered engine was unable to free them from the ice, which was beginning to push against their hull. Back to Hudson Bay for them! But the next day, they were able to pass through.

Marisa tells us about their passage from Bellot Strait:

" The French boat was behind us as we crossed the Bellot Strait. We crossed a strip of ice, picking our way through the small openings, but like a door, it closed behind us. We had a clear path and were happy to continue when the French boat radioed that it was stuck in the ice. We told them we'd wait until they freed themselves. But the ice lifted the boat out of the water and the current spun it around like a toy. The captain (and, incidentally, four experienced sailors on board) sent out a panicked radio message... we could hear that he was terrified and asking for help. We turned around and headed for them as fast as we could, thinking about how we could help them (lines, etc., or just get them on our boat). Fortunately, the ice shifted again and pushed them back. They were now behind us and we showed them the way through the ice to Fort Ross. They were very grateful and came with a French feast and wine. That's when we learned that they had a little girl on board :-( The parents live on the boat, and they have two crew members on board. Neither of them has ever had an experience like this, and the boat suffered some damage (a huge dent in the hull) when the ice lifted them. So we had a wonderful evening, then the ice came back and we had to move... again! We returned to the Lévesque anchorage and of course... we had to go through the ice again, and there was ice in the anchorage too. So we did the night and ice watch and now we're all awake, drinking coffee and chatting about yesterday. GARCIA made an incredible boat. We broke the ice and he's doing really well. "

The entire GARCIA shipyard team is very proud of their achievement and congratulates them once again!

An impromptu meeting with Pete GOSS in Cherbourg. Good advice...

While Pete GOSS was visiting the Garcia Yachts shipyard a few months ago, Marisa and…

Pete GOSS, a former Exploration 45 owner himself, is always willing to share his memories on board. All three agreed to let us film their exchanges. On the program: Why choose an aluminium sailboat? Why choose a centreboarder ? Why does a centreboarder offer so much freedom? How to optimize daggerboard depth adjustment? How does a deck saloon contribute to safety? Where on the boat should I keep watch? How to optimize battery charging? How to manage freshwater consumption and production? And so much more...

There are probably many questions you're asking yourself, and you'll find the answers in this fascinating 1-hour video!

3 GARCIA Exploration 45 candidates for the Northwest Passage in the Arctic summer of 2024!

Located north of the American continent, above the Arctic Circle, this wide maritime space is…

Its straits and bays become ice-free in summer, allowing ships to pass through. But passage is never guaranteed: even more than icebergs, it's the "pack", floating blocks of ice that can block passage and sometimes even dangerously encircle sailing ships.

Source: Wikipedia

Every year, between 10 and 20 pleasure yachts attempt this passage.

In 2023, a mild year, 21 yachts passed, whereas in 2003, of the 7 that attempted the passage, only 2 succeeded. It's worth noting that while the majority of candidates set off from the West, others take the opposite route from Alaska. There are a few Inuit villages along the way, but no infrastructure or services, so sailboats embarking on this adventure must be totally self-sufficient!

Credit: Hector John Periquin

Although global warming is causing the ice to melt irretrievably, this does not make passage any easier. The ice is thinner than it used to be in the Canadian Arctic, but this very thin ice breaks more easily: it is transported by winds and currents in proportions that are difficult to predict. By 2022, ice had completely blocked the Northwest Passage.

At the beginning of August 2024, the 3 Garcia Exploration 45 are sailing up the west coast of Greenland, waiting for the right moment to enter Lancaster Sound. For the time being, this gateway to the passage is rather free of ice, but it is still very present further east. So be patient, and enjoy the superb fjords and glaciers of Greenland.

This Garcia fleet is very international: HAURU, N°35 is driven by its Polish owner, NIGHT OWL, N°27, by an English owner. And VOYAGER, N°38, welcomes aboard her Swiss owners, accompanied by a couple of Canadian friends... themselves owners of N°44, CHINOOK, left for the occasion on the other side of the Atlantic in Cherbourg.

Garcia Exploration 45 : Nusquama's baptism

A look back at the launch and christening of Nusquama.

The launch of a boat is always an event for the shipyard, as it brings a project closer to completion. For the owners, the launch represents the culmination of a collaboration and the realization of a dream.

Launching

The boat is first transported by road to the launching area. The journey is more or less delicate, depending on the size of the yacht. The boat is then installed in the travelift's straps, which can support up to 300 tons.

The travelift takes the boat out to sea. As it moves forward, its wheels on either side of the boom, the maneuver is impressively precise. All those watching the spectacle have their eyes riveted on the boat until it finally lands on the water.

The technical team then joins the boat to board it and moor it to the pontoon, before resuming the final checks.

A christening by the book

Patrick and Susannah, owners of Nusquama, were delighted to come to Cherbourg to witness the launch of their Garcia Exploration 45.

They travelled all the way from Great Britain especially for the event, to see the imposing manoeuvre in action. Naturally, they took the opportunity to christen their boat in the proper manner, with a bottle of champagne that will hopefully have made Neptune magnanimous.

This will be followed by the installation of the interior fittings, then the fittings, and finally the masting and application of a vinyl covering to the hull.

Everyone at the shipyard plays an active part in the progress of this unit, which sees Garcia Yachts return to the 55-foot-plus aluminium blue water cruising for which it is renowned. Launch scheduled for spring 2022.

The aluminium exploration catamaran par excellence

Following in the footsteps of the Garcia Exploration range, theExplocat 52 is dedicated to adventure in all latitudes, off the beaten track. It's ideal for long-distance sailing, when you need to negotiate different weather systems in the most comfortable conditions.

With no equivalent on the market, it meets a set of specifications that considerably opens up the field of action:

  • Optimized sea passage thanks to weight control and centering, as well as low gondola height,
  • The strength and robustness ofaluminium increases the safety margin when sailing in unfamiliar areas, and ensures excellent rigidity of the platform,
  • Optimum crew protection with inner wheelhouse and protected maneuvering station,
  • Standard interior fittings Garcia Yachts combining functionality, ergonomics, noble materials and a high level of finish.

The shipyard teams Garcia Yachts will be present at the Salon International du Multicoque, from April 24 to 28, 2019 in La Grande-Motte. If you'd like to join us, make an appointment now!

Exploration 52 makes the Northwest Passage

This summer, ice build-up in Bellot Strait made it particularly difficult for boats to make…

All sailboats in the area had to suspend their westward progress. Even the cruise liners changed course and turned back.

Only a Garcia Exploration 52, with whom Nature was a little more indulgent, managed to make its way through the ice fields and into the open waters further west.

It's a reminder that this passage remains one of the most delicate, demanding and roughest navigations, where you can only venture if you have total confidence in your boat.

The first hybrid-powered Exploration 45

Michael, Inge and their 3 children live in Denmark, a country where 80% of electricity…

"We love sailing and we wanted to motor sail silently, without burning fossil fuels, using renewable energy as much as possible. We wanted a boat that has no limits, a comfortable and safe home on the water, which allows the absence of any link with civilization if needed for a period of 3 months. At anchor, we'll have 22 kW available for induction cooking, the washing machine, the diving compressor, the outboard motor and so on. (...) I really don't see any constraints in going green, only advantages."

This is the challenge Garcia Yachts by the future owners of Anemis, a boat that looks like them, for a project rooted in respect for the environment.

A sailing program over several years, starting with a tour of the Mediterranean, followed by an Atlantic loop, and then a tour of Northern Europe. Always with an open vision of blue water cruising :

"We'll have no plans other than to enjoy where we are. "

Technically, hybrid propulsion is organized around an electric motor - which takes the place of the traditional internal combustion engine - a bank of lithium batteries and a Generator. The batteries are charged by hydro-generation when the boat is under sail, as well as via Solar panels and a wind turbine. When motoring, the electric propulsion runs on batteries. Then, if required, the Generator takes over to power the electric motor. As with the use of a hybrid, it's by adapting your sailing mode to this type of propulsion that you can significantly reduce your diesel consumption: half the diesel consumed in "propulsion via the Generator " mode compared with a combustion engine, and a voluntary reduction in engine sailing time in favor of sailing. Overall, diesel consumption is between a quarter and a half of normal consumption. This increases range and motoring radius to over 1,200 miles.

A choice that also offers hitherto forgotten advantages, such as the ability to approach certain areas and their marine inhabitants in absolute silence.

After many discussions - both functional and technical - on how to sail and live on board, Michael, Inge and Garcia Yachts worked with OceanVolt to develop the right hybrid propulsion solution for the project. OceanVolt, not exactly a novice, is Alex Thompson Racing's official supplier for a fossil-free Vendée Globe 2020.

Exploration 45 and 52: Fraternity... freedom!

As in every family, a birth is always an occasion to get together.

In the family Garcia Yachtsthe little eldest didn't miss a chance to say hello to the big newborn! The moment was immortalized in a video of our two adventurers, dreaming of their next voyages, bows already pointing towards faraway destinations.

Meet us at the autumn trade fairs

With so many new products and subtle changes underway at Garcia Yachting, the autumn shows…

We'll be in the UK from September 14 to 23, at the Southampton Boat Show. We'll be delighted to welcome you on a Exploration 45ready to set sail for her Australian home port. No doubt its bright light oak interior will keep you on board longer than you ever imagined.

If a more classic interior, in Afrormosia, is more to your taste, you'll have to go to the traditional Grand Pavois in La Rochelle, between September 26 and October 1, to discover an Exploration 45 that will take its owners on a second half of a round-the-world voyage, the first initiated 20 years earlier on a catamaran.

Finally, it's on the other side of the Atlantic, in Annapolis (MD), from October 04 to 08, that we'll have the pleasure of meeting up again with Pete Goss and his wife Tracey, one year almost to the day after the launch of their Exploration 45 Pearl of Penzance. A meeting rich in experience after a transatlantic crossing and a summer on the East Coast of the United States. And, of course, we're still waiting for the story of the Pacific, New Zealand and the Horn...

Exploration 60 - Nowhere you can't go!

Garcia Yachting, following the success of the Exploration 45 and 52, launches the flagship of…

At the request of our customers who, after visiting the Exploration 52, were planning to sail aboard a larger yacht, Garcia Yachting, again with Olivier Racoupeau, designed theExploration 60. Why 60 feet? Undoubtedly because it's the size that offers greater autonomy, more storage and even greater comfort - while remaining manageable, like the other models in the range, by an unmanned couple thanks to maneuvers within the helmsman's reach.

The architect has obviously retained the Exploration DNA for our flagship yacht: theExploration 60 is designed and optimized to sail anywhere in conditions of unparalleled comfort and safety. You'll find the deck saloon, the panoramic view allowing interior watchkeeping with a real wheelhouse, the attention paid to insulation - double glazing and door - the centering of weights and the exterior watch stations protected under the hatch. TheExploration 60's program includes exploration of the most remote sites.

All the features that make anchoring easier and safer are present: dinghy gantry, skirt with direct access to the sea, additional integrated mooring lines. TheExploration 60 will be available in three accommodation versions - two, three or four cabins. Bonus for the first version: a huge owner's aft cabin .

The interior design, currently under study, will showcase the quality of finish and expertise of the Garcia shipyard. Two choices of woodwork are planned.

TheExploration 60 offers even more, with an extra-wide stern cap, a cockpit divided into a helm area and a relaxation area, a sundeck - because this yacht is also designed for tropical waters - a galley just like at home, and a lounge area in the saloon.

Fighting preconceived ideas: upwind course

Our friend Jimmy Cornell has nothing but praise for theExploration 45 on which he completed…

Amidst breathtaking images of polar bears, bluish icebergs and raging seas, we found this screenshot from the Aventura plotter. The scene takes place at 72° North. At this latitude, Inuit land merges with ice ten months out of the year. But since Alaska, the ice has been willing to let Jimmy and his crew through.

It's the last strait before reaching the Baffin Sea, before sailing in open waters towards Greenland. But nothing is ever simple at sea, especially in these high latitudes. So, of course, the wind blows exactly in line with the route. But with the deep centreboard descending to 2.90 m below the surface, perfectly profiled as it is free of any ballast constraints, its keelboat-like stability and perfectly adapted sail plan, the upwind course (blue trace) of theExploration 45 is excellent!

Who said, " A centreboarder doesn't go upwind "?

Explocat 52 : A clear evolution

Garcia Yachting has been building blue water cruising monohulls for 40 years. To date, more…

At some point, it was bound to happen! An aluminium ocean-going multihull! Of course, there had already been the Banana 43, then the SC48 released two years ago, both fruits of Groupe Grand Large Yachting synergies, which had set the trend. TheExplocat 52, whose outline was unveiled in a world preview at the Salon International du Multicoque last April, is the culmination of these efforts.

Just like a real Garcia, but on two hulls!

TheExplocat 52 's elegant lines, design features and equipment are the fruit of a great deal of experience and close collaboration between architect Pierre Delion and the technical and sales teams at Garcia Yachts.

A sturdy, comfortable marine catamaran designed for blue water cruising at all latitudes.

In addition to the intrinsic qualities of the aluminium material, which is essential for this type of project, the key elements of the specifications are uncompromising: watertight partitions and doors, reinforced insulation, a composite roof cap, weight centering, sandwich layouts and large storage capacities.

Initial contacts are made. The reception is enthusiastic. Are you interested too? Write to us at sales@garciayachts.com
