Proof against frozen seas

When Jimmy Cornell set out to tackle the North-West Passage, he hadn't yet found the boat on which he would accomplish the feat.

It was then that he crossed paths with Stéphan Constance, CEO of Garcia Yachts and renowned naval architect Olivier Racoupeau. Together, they are going to offer him the boat of his dreams, one that will stand up to the icy seas.

Jimmy Cornell says:

" The Arctic has often been described as the canary in the coal mine (the bird's death warned miners of the presence of a dangerous gas), and what was happening in the Northwest Passage was a warning. Global warming could have serious repercussions for the entire planet. I had to go. But to do that, I needed a new boat, one suited to the journey I was about to embark on. And quickly.

I'd been looking for the perfect cruise ship for a long time, to no avail. But when I met Stephan Constance, CEO of Garcia Yachts and Allures Yachting, changed everything. They were the best aluminium yacht builders in France, and they had Olivier Racoupeau, one of France's leading naval architects, at their side. Without a doubt, they were going to build the boat of my dreams. I knew exactly what I wanted: a boat that was solid, fast, comfortable, functional, easy to handle and, above all, perfectly suited to my adventure in extreme environments. A boat that would take me further than any other.

I made it clear that I wanted to retain the best features of my previous Aventura, such as an unpainted aluminium hull , centreboarder, Shallow draft and cutter rig. A deck saloon was something that had never been attempted before on a centreboarder, mainly because the extra height could affect its stability. But by opting for a low profile, designer Olivier Racoupeau came up with what I consider to be the perfect solution: a comfortable deck saloon with 270-degree visibility, as well as an interior navigation and monitoring station that doesn't compromise the boat's stability or aesthetics. On the contrary, this magnificent deck saloon and its panoramic view gave me the impression of being on a sailing boat open to the world. Work on theExploration 45, which I then renamed Aventura IV, began in the summer of 2013, and for a year everyone at Garcia Yachts worked passionately on this new boat concept to give me everything I'd hoped for. In May 2014, I headed for Greenland and the Northwest Passage, ready to put my new Aventura IV to the test in the frozen seas. The adventure was finally about to begin ..."
